The leaves are deciduous in the short dry season, and only fall shortly before the new leaves develop. t is now widely cultivated in tropical regions throughout the world for its edible fruit, and is also naturalised in some areas, including the Philippines and Nigeria, It is also is available in winter and are usually eaten with salt or cooked in Syrup, and on the other hand the red ripe jocote, which ripen in summer are eaten with out salt as they are sweeter. The green young leaves also have an acidic taste and can be eaten raw or in salads.

Jocote is one of the fruits that brings us many benefits and that has great medicinal properties. The vitamin C content of the jocote gives it many therapeutic uses, being among other things very good to improve the repair of the tissues of the whole body. Its bark and leaves are used to treat diabetes, insomnia, inflammation, stomach cramps, hemorrhoids or malaria among other health problems. Native women in costa rica ate Jocote when they were getting ready to go into labor because of its high iron and vitamin C content.

Jocote has aphrodisiac properties but in addition to its seeds a very good oil is extracted to eliminate moles, warts, corns or muds.
